A preparation checklist for the wilderness for backpacking or any wilderness trip is crucial for a safe and enjoyable experience. Here is a general checklist.

Research and Planning

  • Study the area you plan to visit, including trail maps, terrain and potential hazards including hunting seasons.
  • Check weather forecast and plan accordingly and be aware of any seasonal considerations.
  • Contact park rangers or others in the area to get the most up to date information.

Physical preparation:

  • Assess your fitness level and tailor your trip to your abilities.
  • Gradually increase your strength and stamina though pre-trip exercise plan.
  • You should also consider an annual physical.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Pack a first aid kit
  • Learn the basics of first aid skills
  • Carry a communication device like a satellite messenger for trips outside of cellular service or the potential to be in deep valleys that may not get signals. These devices are becoming more reasonable in cost, or they can be rented.

Wildlife Awareness

  • Learn about the wildlife in the area including potential dangers.
  • Understand the proper response should you encounter a dangerous animal on your trek.
  • Store food securely to avoid attracting animals to your campsite.

Permits and Regulations

  • Check if there are required permits; keeping in mind some locations may require signup well in advance of your trip.
  • Familiarize yourself with any regulations, such as campfire restrictions, hunting, fishing and waste disposal rules.

Navigation Skills:

  • Familiarize yourself with the trail maps and navigation tools. I always recommend carrying official maps of the area along with any personalized maps you may make for your specific trip plan.
  • Carry a map and compass and consider a GPS device for backup.
  • You should familiarize yourself with basic navigation skills with a map and compass.

Gear Check

  • Inspect and test all your gear, including backpack, tent, sleeping bag and cooking equipment.
  • Ensure your clothing is suitable for the expected weather conditions

Water purification

  • Bring reliable water filtration system and/or purification tablets.
  • Identify potential water sources along your route and plan accordingly.

Food Planning

  • Plan and pack your meals considering weight, nutrition, and ease of preparation.
  • Be mindful of the need to pack out trash and food waste.

Leave No Trace Principles

  • Understand any additional principles for the area you are planning to explore.

Tell Someone Your Itinerary

  • Share your trip itinerary with a reliable friend and/or a family member.
  • Specify your planned route, camping locations and expected return date.
